Kombiverkehr Deutsche Gesellschaft für kombinierten Güterverkehr mbH & Co. Kommanditgesellschaft, based in Frankfurt am Main, develops, organises and markets a Europe-wide network of trains for continental combined rail-road freight transport. In doing so, the company acts as a service provider for freight forwarders and transport companies. The company’s objective is to offer environmentally friendly and economically viable rail connections that enable freight forwarders to carry out combined transport using lorries, rail and sea/inland waterway vessels, by bundling transport requests into volumes suitable for block trains, thereby competing with direct long-distance road freight transport. Rail accounts for the largest share of the transport route, the so-called main leg. Since the 2025 financial year, Kombiverkehr has also been heavily involved in the provision of rail transport services through its shareholdings. Kombiverkehr KG provides the additional services required, such as terminal services or the provision of wagons, primarily by holding stakes in high-value companies that provide these services, thereby integrating itself into the value chain along the intermodal transport route. The investment portfolio comprises a total of 23 companies.
Kombiverkehr operates the largest network for continental connections within Germany, offering customers intermodal transport solutions between the major economic centres overnight. The international network connects European economic centres in 25 European countries. The networks are interconnected via so-called gateway hubs, where intermodal loading units – containers, swap bodies and semi-trailers – can be transferred between trains using cranes. Kombiverkehr operates exclusively in accordance with its own terms and conditions, a revised version of which has been in force since 1 February 2024.
Behind the limited partnership, founded in Frankfurt am Main in 1969, stand, in an equal partnership, 226 national and international freight forwarders on the one hand and DB Cargo AG, Mainz (hereinafter “DB Cargo”) on the other. The company’s articles of association provide for an equal distribution of voting rights between the freight forwarder shareholders and DB Cargo. Corporate decisions are taken within the defined areas of responsibility by the management, the board of directors and the shareholders’ meeting.
